-
- The following list are the data entry fields for each record stored in the
- database:
-
- Length
- Field Description (Characters) Format
-
- Country * Issuing stamp 25 Text
- Catalog No. * Catalog number 10 Alpha/Numeric
- Category * Type 20 Text
- Issue Year * Year issued 8 Numeric
- Description Catalog descrip. 35 Text
- Condition * Unused-Used 6 Text
- Grade * Condition 10 Text
- Purchase Date * Date purchased 8 MM/DD/YY
- Cost * Purchase price 8 $0-$99,999.00
- Market Value * Catalog value 8 $0-$99,999.00
- Notes Remarks 100 Text
-
- * Fields used to sort and query the database.
-
- StampBase removes empty spaces from each field when the record is written to
- the data file (.dat). This feature saves disk space. The index file (.idx)
- does not have this feature. Your index file may actually be larger than your
- data file.
-
-
-
-
-
- 12
- Enter Data:
-
- Data entered does not become part of a field until the cursor is moved to
- another field by pressing TAB, pointing to a field and clicking or pressing
- SHIFT, TAB. Press TAB to move the cursor forward from field to field and
- button to button. Press SHIFT, TAB to move backward. A mouse is used to move
- around the screen by pointing to a field and clicking once. Within each
- field use the direction, BACKSPACE, DEL and INS keys to edit.
-
- The program does not require fields to be changed when the data from the
- previous record is the same as the current record you are entering. Press TAB
- to skip to the next field without changing information in the current field.
-
- Each data entry field has built-in edit checking. Information is verified as
- valid when entered. For example, you cannot enter alpha characters in the
- Cost field. A Data Entry Error dialog box will appear if an invalid entry is
- made. Press ENTER to remove the dialog box.
-
- StampBase may insert one or more zeroes in the catalog number you enter. The
- program does this to insure this field will sort properly. For example, the
- catalog number 235 will become 0235. If the zero is not added, the catalog
- number 1257 will be listed before 235 because "1" is less than "2".
-
- Each stamp's purchase date must be entered in the format MM/DD/YY. StampBase
- may insert zeroes in the date to insure the field will sort properly. For
- example, a date entered as 1/1/92 will be changed to 01/01/92 by the program
- after you press TAB.
-
-
- Category, Condition and Grade Fields
- ------------------------------------
-
- Type an entry in these fields or select from the pull-down list box.

-
-
-
-
-
- 13
- Annual Rate Of Return
- ---------------------
-
- This field displays the increased/(decreased) value of each stamp as an annual
- percentage rate. The rate is based on the length of time you have owned the
- stamp. The field is calculated each time a record is displayed on the screen.
-
- You cannot edit this field. This field is for display only and is not saved
- in the database.
-
-
- Data Entry and Edit Command Buttons:
-
- The command buttons at the top of the screen can be activated by pointing to a
- button and clicking or pressing ALT and the key for the underlined letter
- except the query buttons (<, <=, =, => and >). Also, TAB can be used to move
- the highlight to a button and pressing ENTER to activate that button.
-
-
- Save a Record:
-
- Mouse * Point to the Add button and click.
-
- Keyboard * Press ALT, A.
-
- This will save the record now displayed on the screen in memory. The cursor
- will then move to the Country field where you begin entering the next record.
- The Status Bar will display an updated number of records in the database. New
- records are saved to the hard drive after every 10 records and when you exit
- from the Data Entry and Edit screen.
-
- Change fields any time before selecting the Add button. See Editing Records
- to change a record after adding it to the database.
-
-
- Editing Records
-
- Use the Data Entry and Edit screen to edit records stored in your database.
-
-
- Find a Record:
-
- StampBase provides query features to find records. A query is done by using
- an exact match (=) or an approximate search (<, <=, => or >). Selecting (>)
- or (=>) when all fields are empty will cause StampBase to display records in
- sorted order by country.
-
- StampBase will search on multiple fields. Queries are not case sensitive.
- The program ignores the order search criteria is entered in the query fields.
- StampBase creates a query by selecting criteria in the following order:
- country, catalog number, category, issue year, condition, grade, purchase
- date, cost and market value. Empty fields are ignored.
-
-
- 14
- 1. Enter the search criteria in the appropriate query field.
-
- 2. Select a query button (<) LESS THAN, (<=) LESS THAN EQUAL TO, (=)
- EQUAL TO, (=>) GREATER THAN EQUAL TO or (>) GREATER THAN and click
- or press ENTER.
-
- StampBase will now search the database using the criteria you
- specified. StampBase will display in the Data Entry and Edit
- screen the first record meeting the criteria. All records are
- available for examination after a successful query. The Data
- Entry Error dialog box will appear if a record is not found.
-
- Press ENTER to clear the dialog box from the screen.
-
- 3. Use the Next button to move forward through the records the query
- found. Use the Previous button to move backward.
-
- Mouse * Point to the Next or Previous buttons and click to display
- more records on the screen.
-
- Keyboard * Press ALT, N (Next) or P (Previous) to display more records
- on the screen.

- on multiple fields. Selecting (>) or (=>) when all fields are empty will
- cause StampBase to display records in sorted order by country, catalog number,
